The maker
Four Winds exists because we kept seeing beautiful mahjong tables covered in mats that meant nothing — pattern for pattern’s sake, printed by the container-load. We thought the table where friends spend twenty years of Tuesday nights deserved better.
Where this started
American mahjong is a game of long friendships. The rules change yearly; the group doesn’t. When we went looking for a mat worthy of that kind of table, everything we found was decoration — generic florals, stock dragons, patterns chosen because they looked vaguely ‘oriental’. Nothing that could tell you what it meant, because none of it meant anything.
Chinese decorative art has spent a thousand years developing motifs that mean something precise. Friendship that survives hardship. Joy you can see on someone’s face. A blessing on the whole house. We chose five of them, drew them properly, and put them where four friends spend their evenings.
How a mat gets made
Every mat is printed after you order it. The design is set by heat-transfer printing — the ink is driven into the polyester fibre, so the pattern is part of the cloth, not a coating on top. It cannot peel, crack, or rub off under years of tile-shuffling.
If your mat is personalized, the names are set into the border art before printing, one to each side, in the same drawn style as the rest of the design. Production takes about four days; then it leaves folded, with a carrying bag, tracked to your door.
The materials
The face is a dense polyester weave chosen for two properties: it takes heat-transfer ink with unusual depth, and it quiets tiles. The backing is non-slip rubber, in 2mm or 3mm. The 2mm folds lighter for the rotating host; the 3mm mutes the racket of a full shuffle to a purr. Both come with a drawstring carrying bag, because this mat travels to wherever the game is this week.
The five designs
Each design page tells the full story of its motif — what it depicts, what it means, and the wordplay or history underneath it. The short version: Three Friends of Winter is friendship that endures. Magpie and Plum is visible joy. Peony and Crab Apple is a blessing on the whole house. Four Gentlemen is the four seasons and four virtues. Crane and Pine is long life. Every one is drawn from the classical sources, and every one belongs on a table of four.
