Crane and Pine — the full mat artwork, flat
The border band of the mat artwork

The crane is the longest-lived of birds in Chinese art, the mount of immortals; the pine keeps its needles through the hardest winter. Together they form one of the oldest blessings in the language: sōnghè yánnián — may the pine and crane extend your years.

It is the motif chosen for elders, for birthdays, for the people a family intends to keep. Cranes also mate for life, which the painters knew perfectly well.

Give it to the group whose game has already lasted twenty years, with every intention of twenty more.

The details

Size
31.5″ × 31.5″ (80 cm square) — fits standard card tables and mahjong tables.
Material
Dense polyester face, printed by dye-sublimation so the design is in the fibre, not on it. Non-slip rubber backing keeps the mat planted while tiles are shuffled.
Thickness
2mm folds smaller and lighter for travel; 3mm quiets the tiles further and feels more cushioned under the wrists.
Care
Spot-clean with a damp cloth and mild soap; air dry flat. Fold along the shipped creases to repack.
In the box
One printed mat, folded, in a drawstring carrying bag in your chosen colour.

Centre of the artwork at close to print scale
The centre medallion, close to print scale. The full mat is 31.5 inches square — edge to edge on a card table, with room for four racks and the pot.
