Plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum: the Four Gentlemen. For centuries they were the first four subjects every ink painter learned, one for each season of the year.

Each carries a virtue. The plum blooms in late winter — courage. The orchid perfumes an empty valley — refinement. Bamboo bends without breaking — integrity. The chrysanthemum flowers into the frost — endurance.

Four seasons, four virtues, four winds, four players. Some motifs have to be adapted to fit a mahjong table. This one was already built for it.

Material
Dense polyester face, printed by dye-sublimation so the design is in the fibre, not on it. Non-slip rubber backing keeps the mat planted while tiles are shuffled.
Thickness
2mm folds smaller and lighter for travel; 3mm quiets the tiles further and feels more cushioned under the wrists.
Care
Spot-clean with a damp cloth and mild soap; air dry flat. Fold along the shipped creases to repack.
