The magpie is China’s joy bird — its name, xǐquè, shares its first sound with the word for happiness. Put one on a plum branch and you get a phrase people have used for centuries: joy up to the eyebrows.

It is a pun. The word for plum branch sounds like the word for eyebrow, so a magpie climbing the branch is joy rising in your face — the particular kind you cannot keep off it.

That is what this mat is for: the moment someone draws the tile they have been waiting on all evening, and everyone at the table sees it before she says a word.

Material
Dense polyester face, printed by dye-sublimation so the design is in the fibre, not on it. Non-slip rubber backing keeps the mat planted while tiles are shuffled.
Thickness
2mm folds smaller and lighter for travel; 3mm quiets the tiles further and feels more cushioned under the wrists.
Care
Spot-clean with a damp cloth and mild soap; air dry flat. Fold along the shipped creases to repack.
