Pine, plum, and bamboo are the Three Friends of the Cold Season. When everything else in the garden has died back, these three keep their colour: the pine stays green, the bamboo stays supple, and the plum blossoms in the snow.

Chinese scholars have painted them together since the Song dynasty, as an emblem of the friends who stay when the weather turns — the ones still at the table after the easy company has gone home.

Which is why they belong under a mahjong game. A group that has played together for years has already been through its winters. This mat says so without anyone having to.

Material
Dense polyester face, printed by dye-sublimation so the design is in the fibre, not on it. Non-slip rubber backing keeps the mat planted while tiles are shuffled.
Thickness
2mm folds smaller and lighter for travel; 3mm quiets the tiles further and feels more cushioned under the wrists.
Care
Spot-clean with a damp cloth and mild soap; air dry flat. Fold along the shipped creases to repack.
